History and Location
The winery was founded in 1968 and taken over by Wolfgang Seher in 2002. The company is based in Platt near Retz and farms 18 ha, 50% of which is Gruner Veltliner. Weingut Seher has two vineyards at Platt and Obersdorf on the Retzer Land in the northwestern part of the Weinviertel wine-growing region. The Winemaker Wolfgang Seher trained in viticulture at the Klosterneuburg wine school in Vienna. Viticulture In this region of northwestern Weinviertal the diverse soil composition of gravel, granite fragments (loess), and lime-free loamy clay (molasse) soils contribute distinct attributes to the Grüner Veltliner, shaping the character and quality of the wine. Winemaking The winery embraces a philosophy of minimal intervention. The grapes are hand-harvested at the peak of ripeness. Fermentation occurs under controlled cool temperatures to enhance the fruit's aromatic profile. Weingut Seher often utilizes native yeasts, allowing the natural fermentation process to add complexity and a true sense of place to the wine. Following fermentation, Grüner Veltliner may be aged in stainless steel tanks or 500 L neutral oak barrels (tonneaux)), depending on the desired style. Before bottling, the wines undergo a light filtration process to achieve clarity. Sustainability Weingut Seher's commitment to sustainable viticulture emphasizing organic farming practices and soil health enriches the vineyard's health and integrity. Availability Wines of Weingut Seher are imported exclusively in the Northwest UK through the Clear Wine Company, Mellor, Manchester. |
