History and Location
The Winkler's farm and vineyard is located in the municipality of Gedersdorf, in Kremstal on the north bank of the Danube river in the in the Austrian state of Neiderosterreich. The farm is situated in the constituent village of Schlickendorf and their vineyards in Gedersdorf have been in the family for over 100 years. The Winemaker Erwin Winkler is known for his hands-on approach and deep connection to the land. A fifth generation in the Winkler family wine business, Erwin Winkler avoids generic, mass-market styles and is committed to crafting wines with personality, structure, with a clear sense of place. His philosophy is reflected by the self-selected motto for the winery, "Wine With Bite". His emphasis on terroir expression and character, and desire for authenticity allows each vineyard site to “speak” through the wine. Viticulture The Winkler family currently cultivate approximately 11 hectares of vines in the Gedersdorf vineyard at their Vordernberg, Moosburgerin, Gebling and Wieland sites. Their most important variety is Grüner Veltliner but they also grow Riesling, Gelber Muskateller, Neuburger, Chardonnay and Zweigelt. Winemaking The winery enjoys a strong local following and excellent reviews, with visitors praising both the wines and the warm hospitality of their Heuriger (traditional Austrian wine tavern).
