Many generations of the Martinez family have run this family winery. It’s based in Rioja Alavesa, in the Basque country, one of the northern most sections of all the Rioja zones at 600 metres of altitude and north of the Ebro river. Here in Torre San Millan we’re in continental climate and a clay limestone terroir. The zone they are in is called Gorrebusto or Bariobusto. So, some people know them by the name Torre San Millan, the name of the winery and some people know them as the name Gorrebusto.
The grapes are manually picked, de-stemmed, fermented for seven days plus fifteen days maceration with temperature control. The red wines are raised for twelve months in American and French casks but mostly in French casks. Younger vines make wines with just a spot of ageing. They’ve got a couple of parcels of really old Tempranillo around the 80 or 90 years mark; that wine gets the best barrels aged on its own and They cover a full range of wines. All their wines are well priced and nothing is over the top. Bodega Torre San Millán Ctra. de Vitoria, 01312, Barriobusto, Araba, Spain |
