La Gontrie was created in 1984 by Jean Louis Rives and his wife Nola and is located in the Cotes de Bordeaux. This is one of the regions that make up the satellites of the Right Bank, which, with clay and limestone in proportions, is very much Merlot based territory. There is a dry white and a botrytis white, mostly Sauvignon Gris, with a bit of Semillon. They also make a dry Bordeaux Blanc and some botrytis sweet wine. They've got Merlot based red, and Sauvignon Gris based white, use clean farming, not certified yet sustainable pro-agriculture.
They use third fill casks so that you can have two wines in them before they use the cask and that means you can have a relatively new barrel with the extrovert oak flavours already removed from them, giving a well-balanced wine without too much oaky flavour. The whites are cold treated to stabilize aromatic profile, fermented at low temperature and aged in tank to retain freshness.
