Riesling is an ancient strain of Vitis vinifera deriving from wild vines from the Rhine Valley. Its main areas of growth today are Germany and northern France. Riesling grows small, thin-skinned berries in compact bunches and is therefore susceptible to botrytis (or noble rot) which yields the highly prized sweet wines of the Rhineland and Austria. Its tough woody stems are resistant to low temperatures facilitating the production of Ice-wines of Canada and Eisweins of Germany. The most popular Riesling wines originate from Rheinhessan and the Mosel Valley, Germany, and from Alsace, in northeastern France.
Other locations include the Claire and Eden Valleys in South Australia, |
where the grape may be known as Rhine Riesling, the southern regions of New Zealand, the Wachau and Kremstal regions of Austria, northern Italy, where it's called Riesling Renano, and the USA, where in California and the Finger Lakes regions it can be referred to as Johannisberg Riesling. Riesling can be found blended with Silvaner in the Franken region of Germany.
Riesling wines offer high acidity, smokiness and focused fruit, showing aromas and flavours that include: nectarine, lemon, pear, apricot, elderflower, green apple, lime, pineapple, peach, ginger, honey, and petrol. |
