- Tempranillo
Originating in Rioja and Navarre, the Tempranillo variety of Vitis vinifera is now Spain's most planted grape variety. Confusingly the grape has several synonyms such as Cencibel in La Mancha and Valdepenas, Tinto Fino and Tinto del Pais in Ribera del Duero, Ojo de Liebre and Ull de Llebre in Catalonia, and Tinto de Toro and Tinto Madrid in many other parts of Spain. Tempranillo is also a popular variety in Portugal where it is known as Aragones or Aragonez or Tinta Aragonesa in the Alentejo region of that country and Arinto Tinto or Tinta Roriz or Tinta de Santiago in the Douro (where it is a key constituent of Port).

Some popular wines made from the Tempranillo grape come from the Rioja, Ribera del Duero and the Toro regions of western and northern Spain. Rioja is arguably Spain's top wine region.
Tempranillo makes low tannin, low alcohol wines that are suited to ageing in oak barrels, showing well known aromas and flavours that include: cherry, plum, strawberry, tomato, cedar, cloves, figs, vanilla, tobacco, and earth. |
