- Sauvignon Blanc
The Sauvignon Blanc variety of Vitis vinifera is a white-wine grape originating most likely from the Bordeaux and the South West region region of France where today it is found in many local IGT wines of the Pays d'Oc and shares a starring role in the dry and sweet wines of Sauternes making up a prime component of the famous Bordeaux White Blend.
Sauvignon Blanc is a well-known international variety well accepted by producers around the world. In northern France it is the single varietal in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, in the USA it is oaked in the Fumé Blanc wines of California's Napa Valley, and in New Zealand the grape, known affectionately as the famous 'Savvy', is grown extensively in the Marlborough region and has come to define an essential New World expression of the eponymous wine. Other notable expressions occur in the San Antonio and Casablanca valleys of Chile, South Africa, |
Australia and in northern Italy in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. Chile, South Africa, Australia and in northern Italy in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region.
Apart from the botrytis-sweet blends of Sauternes, Sauvignon Blanc blends to make the drier styles including the Verdejo grape in the white wine of Rueda, Spain, and with Vermentino and Viognier in the white Super Tuscan wines of Central Italy. Sauvignon Blanc grapes are vigorous, high yielding, high acidity, ripening early, and express individual and characteristic flavours with zingy freshness in cool climates with aromas and flavours that include: elderflower, green apple, lemon, mango, white peach, pear, gooseberry, lime, asparagus, cut grass, bell pepper (capsicum), grapefruit, passionfruit, cat pee (tasters' term for guava). |
